Tickets for Australia's biggest Rugby party, the Adelaide Sevens, the sixth leg of the 2007/08 IRB Sevens World Series, go on public sale at 9.30am AEDT (9.00am ACDT) today, 29 October.
The inaugural event attracted more than twenty-five thousand people in its inaugural year and with tickets for the 2008 event starting from just $25.00 for adults and $60.00 for families, sports fans, event-lovers and families alike have the chance to join the party as 16 international teams and the world's fastest players compete over two days next April.
Also announced today were 12 of the 16 competing teams, with Australia joining inaugural Adelaide Sevens champions Fiji as well as traditional rivals England, France, South Africa and 2006/07 iRB Sevens World Series champions New Zealand.
Argentina, Samoa, Canada, Scotland, Kenya and Wales, will also feature at the 2008 Adelaide Sevens.
ARU Managing Director & CEO John O'Neill AO said the Sevens version of the game had been well received in rugby's growth areas, as seen at the 2006 Commonwealth Games and the Adelaide Sevens last year.
"The success of Sevens at the Commonwealth Games and then last year at the inaugural Adelaide Sevens showed that the Australian public have a real appetite for this form of the game," he said.
"The ARU wants to continue to grow the sport throughout the country and the Adelaide Sevens event is a great vehicle to bring international rugby to a burgeoning market."
ARU High Performance General Manager and former Wallaby Pat Howard said the Australian Sevens program plays an important role in developing future Wallabies and helps develop the skills required to be successful in the international game.
"Sevens has been a stepping stone for many of our elite representative players, including current Wallabies Drew Mitchell, Adam Ashley-Cooper, Matt Giteau and Stephen Hoiles, and we hope this continues to be the case," he said.
"With the high speed and skill levels on offer, from all the teams, this version of the game highlights many of the exciting aspects of rugby in a festival-like environment."
Tournament Director and SA Rugby CEO Rob Nelson said he was delighted with the response to the inaugural event with Adelaide really embracing the carnival atmosphere that is Sevens Rugby.
"It's almost impossible to get a ticket to the Hong Kong Sevens and the Wellington event sells out in 20 minutes, so we are fortunate to have a round of the highly popular IRB Sevens World Series in Adelaide," he said.
"This is a truly unique event in that it delivers a blend of elite sport in a genuine party atmosphere."
